Emotional Labor Is Still Labor: Naming What You Carry to Work Every Day

Emotional labor, managing your own feelings and other people's, is a real, exhausting part of many jobs, yet it's rarely named, measured, or compensated. This session gives language to the invisible work of staying composed, absorbing others' stress, and smoothing over conflict, and explores how employees can name this labor and protect their capacity.

Learning objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Define emotional labor and recognize where it shows up in their own role.

  2. Articulate the difference between emotional labor that's part of the job description and labor that's been informally offloaded onto them.

  3. Identify signs of emotional depletion before they become burnout.

  4. Develop language for naming emotional labor to managers and teams, where appropriate.
